Nick Deans lost a long battle with kidney disease in the summer of 1991, bringing a premature end to a highly creative working life. 'Nick's sculptures are a representation of the female form not a true likeness. He was obsessed with the human body particularly the female form. His figures, which were carved from a trunk of wood or a block of marble, conjured as idealized form, elongated and flowing. When he used wood, he would begin carving with a chainsaw, cutting into the wood in large swoops as if it were a paintbrush. With wood or marble, sculptors are "taking away" and if too much is removed it can never be replaced. Nick always said "I can see the form I want, it is just a matter of getting rid of the dross".'
